Textile Messaging

Berta Goldgaber is weaving her magic again. This textile artist is conveying the message of Passover through her magical multi-colored geometric-patterned Judaica fabric art.

In addition to her Passover matzah covers, Affikomen bags and covers, aprons and more – she has created quilts, challah covers and chuppot. Her work is displayed in St. Louis…and in Boston. She’s had quilts hanging at the Argonne Gallery in Kirkwood and the Art Space at Provisions in Creve Coeur.

She’s also shown her work at the Kolbo Gallery in Boston for whom she’s currently doing a special order. In addition, on Sunday, March 29, she’ll be displaying her wares at the Nishmah Pre-Passover experience, “Join the Journey” at the Crowne-Plaza in Clayton from 3 to 7:30 p.m.

Berta was born in Brazil and came to Saint Louis in 1970 with her husband and two children. “I was always involved in sewing. About 15 years ago, I started creating quilts,” she said. "I wanted to make Jewish quilts. After some research, however, I realized there wasn't too much there. I started looking for patterns that could look Jewish. Finally, I came up with my own patterns.”

After a few years, she started to get local recognition. Her work was spotlighted in several galleries with a Show at Componere in the Loop in 2007.  From September to December of last year, her quilts were displayed at the Belas Artes, part of a Latin Arts Festival here.

She was also shown last September at the St. Louis Artist's Guild where she received an award. Other awards include a blue ribbon and gold medal at the Senior Olympics Art contest held at the JCC in 2003. In December, 2007, she was featured as a Jewish Artist in the national Crafts Report Magazine.

When Berta’s not creating art, she’s teaching it. Berta has a Fabric Workshop that she takes to schools, synagogues, Girls Scouts, etc.
