Building Bridges: The Three Cups of Tea Project
Built around the best-selling book, “Three Cups of Tea” by Greg Mortenson, jewishinstlouis.org and Solomon Schechter Day School (SSDS) are partnering for an interactive semester.
The pilot project is designed to enhance the school’s classroom curriculum with a special online, multimedia tool, housed in a special micro-site on the St. Louis Jewish community website at www.jewishinstlouis.org/3Cups. The micro-site, “Building Bridges: The Three Cups of Tea Project,” will be updated regularly by SSDS students and staff.

A Welcome From Rabbi Selis:
Principal, Solomon Schechter Every once in a while, I come across a story that takes my breath away. Greg Mortenson’s 'Three Cups of Tea' is such a story. Struggling to reconnect with his climbing group after a failed attempt to summit K-2, Mortenson wandered into the remote Pakistani village of Korphe. The encounter changed Mortenson’s life, and he returned to build a school for the villagers who had rescued him.
At Solomon Schechter, we were so impressed by the connection between Mortenson’s story and our core mission that we asked our entire student body read youth editions of 'Three Cups of Tea.' The Jewish values seemed to jump from the pages: Welcoming guests. Giving tzedakkah. Promoting education. Healing the world. This is such a Jewish book!
For one week in April, we will turn Solomon Schechter into the Pakistani village of Korphe as a way to explore the language, history and culture of Mortenson’s friends. Through a visionary partnership with jewishinstlouis.org, our students and faculty will share their journey by doing Internet research, authoring blogs and posting curriculum which other schools can use.
We welcome you to share in our journey!
