Torah Restoration
Thursday, Nov. 5 at 7pm
(St. Peters, MO) - The support for restoration of a 200-year-old Torah Scroll that the Nazis threw into a basement in Prague, Czechoslovakia, has brought out the best from members of the Christian, Muslim, and Jewish communities in nearby Saint Louis, as well as residents of St. Charles County. Restoration will cost about $15,000.
When the only synagogue in St. Charles County, Congregation B’nai Torah, with 40 member families, announced that, it wanted to restore this holy text and historical object to make it fit for prayer service, the St. Charles Interfaith Partnership voted unanimously to hold a fund-raising event.
Ann Miller, chairperson of the St. Charles Interfaith Partnership, announced, “This is an example how the Interfaith community supports one another.” Other members agreed that without the Torah their religions and their holy books would not have been born.
The Torah Restoration Fund will get all donations received at the annual Forum. This event is free and open to the public. It is scheduled for November 5, 2009, 7 PM, at the Community of Christ, 2790 Hwy K in O’Fallon, Missouri.
In St. Louis, two individuals are working hard to rally support for this restoration. A 12-year old girl, Lexie Winter, a student at United Hebrew, a large congregation in Chesterfield, has organized support from the 500 students at her congregation for weekly donations to support the intricate repairs. She is also contacting other synagogues in St. Louis to advocate support from their students.
Mark Richman, well known nationally for his presentation of Frank Sinatra songs, has donated his time to present a benefit concert on Nov.15, 2009, at 7 PM, at Clayton High School, #1 Mark Twain Circle, Clayton, MO 63105. Attendance is by donation of the donor’s choice, and 100% of the donations will go toward the restoration.
