JF&CS Programs Provide Warm Clothes, ToysJewish Family & Children’s Service (JF&CS) offers help to families in need year-round and recognizes that those families who struggle often carry an even larger load during the holidays. To address the needs of these families, the organization created the Hanukkah Hugs and Adopt-A-Family Programs.
Now in its 15th year, Adopt-A-Family was developed as a way for area organizations, such as synagogues, clubs or corporations, to help families at Hanukkah with their individual needs. Children’s sizes and toy choices are anonymously communicated to members or employees, who donate toys, clothes, household items and even funds for rent and utilities. The adopting organization then delivers the items to JF&CS for distribution. Adapting to accommodate the needs of each family, JF&CS helped 38 families in 2008, including 96 children. One synagogue alone adopted 17 families. JF&CS staff members are easily able to identify and reach out to eligible participants, since most are already clients of the agency’s food pantry or financial assistance program.
While the list of requested items usually consists of winter coats and other warm clothes, books, educational toys, stuffed animals and pajamas, many families are also in need of bed linens, towels and blankets.
For adopting families or individuals who have limited time to shop, gift cards - such as from Target or American Express - also make wonderful gifts.
JF&CS believes that every child should receive a new toy for the holidays, and thus developed Hanukkah Hugs. Since 1998, the agency has collected gifts for children whose families are clients of JF&CS’ food pantry or counseling services. The toy drive takes place at about 20 area locations, including temples and synagogues, businesses and social service agencies, and at JF&CS. Volunteers then sort the items and help distribute age-appropriate toys to clients in need.
Hanukkah Hugs and Adopt-A-Family can make a significant difference for families who lack the resources to give gifts to their loved ones during the holiday season. For more information, please call Sue Rundblad at 314-812-9307.
